Vail, Colorado
Vail is located in Eagle County, Colorado. According to 2005 Census Bureau estimates,
the population of Vail is 4,589. Vail was established in 1966 at the base
of
Vail Ski Resort, which opened in December 1962. Vail is famous for having
the largest single ski mountain in North America and other winter sports in addition
to being a year round destination for outdoor activities.
Vail Ski Resort
The Vail Ski Resort is located next to the town of Vail. Vail Mountain, at 5,289 acres, is the largest single mountain ski resort in The United
States, featuring seven bowls and intermediate gladed terrain in Blue Sky Basin.
Construction of the Vail Resort began in 1962 in a valley devoid of civilization.
Vail Ski Resort opened just 6 months later on December 15th. There were 3 lifts upon opening,
one gondola that ran from the frontside base to the peak, a lift from mid-mountain
to the peak, and a lift that brought skiers back up from the back bowls. In just
7 years, Vail had grown to become the most popular ski resort in Colorado, and vail
village had started forming at the base, near the gondola, which had been replaced
since its opening.
